West Crete

Mountains rearing straight up from the sea, deep wooded gorges, ravines and valleys and yet more glorious mountains, standing proud and acting as a magnet to the eye and the imagination – that’s western Crete, or real Crete, as some would say.

Western Crete rural life continues at the same slow pace as it has for centuries. The West is the greenest and most mountainous area of Crete.

Crete Retreats is located in the area of Ennachoria. Mass tourism has not yet discovered the region. From here it is near to go to a lot of attractive spots like Balos, Falasarna, Elafonisi or the monastery of Chrisoskalitissa, which is built on a rock overlooking the sea. Falasarna is best known for its fine sandy beach and crystal clear waters, while the beaches of Balos and Elafonisi are reminiscent of a South Sea lagoon: white and in parts pink sand and a small island to which it is possible to wade through a shallow channel.
